“If you love something set it free, if it comes back it’s meant to be”- my mother

This is a quote that will probably be in my brain forever. It is such a simple message that remains so true. Although normally when my mother spoke these wise words to me they were in regards to providing advice about conflicts with a friend or someone I was dating at the time, today I am going to relate it to my love of shopping.

Do you ever see something in a store and talk yourself out of buying it to then later regret it? This isn’t something that happens to me so often; if I walk away from a purchase I’ve usually accepted it by the time I’m out of the store. I recently made one exception when pondering over this nautical inspired button down. I wasn’t sure if I should buy it because I knew I wouldn’t be able to wear it until the weather was a lot warmer. When I buy something I wanna wear it right away.

While trying to decide if I should buy the button down or not I thought of the wise words of my mother and put the blouse down. After leaving the store and arriving home I kept thinking of all the different ways I would style the button down, leading me to decide that I must go back to buy it. When I arrived back to the store just a few days later, they unfortunately were sold out and wouldn’t receive any others because it was on sale. I figured that I set it free and it just wasn’t meant to be.

A few weeks down the road I was visiting Quebec City and I stopped in at the store that sold the button down that I loved oh so much. To my great surprise, it was there, still on sale and in my size. I thought to myself once again of the wise words from my mama, picked up the button down and headed to the cash. It was meant to be.

back to black

knee high boot outfit

With the weather still flipping and flopping I have been slowly transitioning my wardrobe. I have this weird association with warm weather and colour. Any time the weather goes around 20 degrees celsius or higher I wear colour and a lot of it. Any temperature below that 20 degree mark- you’ll find me wearing dark shades. This weekend the weather went back to cooler temps which meant back to black for me.

When the weather isn’t working in my favour I can always count on a black and white outfit to leave me feeling comfortable and put together.  For those who follow along on my posts on a regular basis know that I love the combination of black and white. If you have yet to learn about this love affair you can read about it here.

Knee high boots leave me feeling sassy yet classy. When you do not want to show too much leg while the temperatures are still cooler, this footwear option is a great choice. A personal favourite style choice for knee-high boots is pairing them with a mini skirt and a beautiful blouse. Showing off just a little bit of leg adds some sass to your look while the feminine touches of a lovely blouse adds the class.

history of the canadian tuxedo- a bloggers perspective

canadian tuxedo

In 2001 two famous pop stars decided to walk the red carpet of the American Music Awards in matching outfits, this was shocking to many. Unfortunately the couple is no longer together, but their style choice from this red carpet appearance will never be forgotten. Thank you Justin Timberlake and Brittany Spears for introducing us to the Canadian Tuxedo. Many may be wondering why this denim on denim look is called the Canadian Tuxedo so today; I am here to shed some light on this question.

I may slightly break your heart with the news I am about to share regarding the history of the Canadian Tuxedo, but trust me- it needs to be known. Although it would have been completely awesome to say that Justin and Brittany were the first to rock the trend of the Canadian Tuxedo, I would be lying if I stated that. Truth is another famous musical artist can take this title. Bing Crosby, a famous crooner from the 50’s decided to enter an upscale hotel in Vancouver Canada sporting the denim on denim look. Shockingly, he was nearly rejected due to his outfit choice. Eventually this news got out and into the right hands – the hands of famous denim manufacturer Levis Straus. When Levi Straus heard of the unfortunate occurrence which had happened to Bing, they were quick to send a specially designed, all denim Tuxedo to Bing Crosby. Because this event had happened in Canada the Canadian Tuxedo was born.

Even though Timberlake and Spears are sadly not the first to sport this look, I would like to think that they were inspired by Bing and wanted to revolutionize Bing’s take on the style.

Although this trend may not be a go to choice for your #ootd (outfit of the day), I am sure that we can all agree recently noticing this style gaining popularity. Did you see Katy Perry rock the look at the MTV awards? I will admit that it took me some time to try out this trend, not being able to find the perfect denim button down and unsure of what shoes and accessories to style it with. Today, I am ready to share my take on the Canadian Tuxedo.

Styled with contrasting shades of denim and neutral booties along with a statement bomber jacket, I felt like I perfected the look. What’s fun about this trend is you can still make it your own; it is so easy to style because you are pairing a basic piece on top of another. Like I always tell you, make your own rules and accessorize and style this trend in the best way that expresses your own personal style.

an ode to men’s clothing

Recently I had a thought, a thought about boyfriend jeans. This thought came about when I was thinking of some past and current trends. I was eager to hop on the bandwagon of the boyfriend jean trend – because I pretty much live by “the baggier the better”. Jeans that are actually like wearing pyjamas – Count me in! While thinking about the beautiful fit of denim, which holds a dear place in my heart, I came to the conclusion that the boyfriend jean has surpassed being a trend and has become a go-to style for many.

This thought, of course, led to another thought, leading me to think about this go-style and how I must not be the only one living it. I am clearly not the only one who has realized that we can basically get away with wearing “pyjama jeans” in public and don’t have to worry about being judged.

While considering this comfort style, I realized I just love wearing “boyfriend” aka men’s clothing in general. I mean, if you can get away with jeans that feel like pyjamas why shouldn’t we try to get away with t-shirts and button downs that feel that way too?

Why you should wear your boyfriend’s clothing

How many times have you opened your closet, completely full and “realized” you have nothing to wear? Well, you never have to worry again. Take something from your man! I mean his closet is probably full of endless opportunities.

Men’s clothing is actually super cute. Styling an oversized t-shirt or button down with a pair of boyfriend jeans or a skinny leg along with a pair of heels is a personal favourite look of mine. There’s something about the mix of feminine and masculine styles I just love.

Men’s clothing fits in a way that makes you feel sexy and empowered. Don’t get me wrong, some days I feel ready to take on the world wearing 4-inch heels and mini skirt but others- men’s clothing makes me feel like nothing is holding me back.

My take on mixing gender clothing

Over the weekend with many errands to run and activities to attend to, I tossed on a men’s button down and was ready to take on the world. Now, I consider myself quite feminine but I didn’t feel one bit out of the norm in this outfit. I chose to match the light gingham print with sparkly shoes. They were the perfect match with this casual men’s button down; providing me a comfortable, fashionable combo for the day’s activities ahead.

my two cents: 70s comeback

70s fashion trends

Those of you who follow fashion know by now that fashion moves in a circular pattern; You know trends come and go. If there was a trend you loved that is no more, don’t be sad – you will see it again someday. As evidence, I think that a certain influential decade is again currently trending like crazy.

I suspect the majority of you reading this post probably did not live in the time period I am talking about. Yet it still has had an impact on you, an impact with enough influence to effect how we currently dress. Wide leg silhouettes, bold striped patterns and off the shoulder blouses. These styles are not new, they have been revived. These styles, back and in full view, are evidence that we are currently experiencing a 70’s comeback.

70's fashion trend

Although many may think that we are far from the 70’s and find the period hard to relate to, I will tell you why this is far from true. Many of us will remember television shows like “That 70’s show”, 70’s disco music gave rise to dance-hall music and Hollywood joined in with movie classics like “The Spy Who Shagged Me” a spoof on 70’s spy movies. We are the sons and daughters of those who did live through this decade and they were, without question, a major influence on us.

70s fashion trends

Despite all the technological advancements we currently enjoy (including many selfies). I think we are still very connected to the 70’s in more ways than just fashion trends. The 70’s were a time of change. The women’s liberation movement led to current feminism, environment issues emerged and the first personal computers of the seventies led to our current cell phones. People felt freer to express themselves and be whoever they wanted to be. Tell me that this is not so similar to our current decade? We grew up encouraged by our parents to be whoever we would like to be. Along with this evolving individuality, no one reading this can deny, that our current culture continues to focus on technological growth, personal rights like feminism and environmental issues that I believe was inspired from the 70’s.

70s fashion trends

Not only was the 70’s a time to “fight for you right”, but it was also a time to party. Think about all the amazing music that was produced during this time period. This was arguably the golden time for musicians to express themselves in ways that had not been seen before. Classic rock remains one of the most preferred genres of music, who among us doesn’t like to “rock on” to Sweet Home Alabama or Stairway to Heaven. Although I sometimes wonder if we’ll ever be able to recreate the musical magic of the 70’s, we still can celebrate it today. Think music festivals. They started in the 60’s to gather people all together to free their soul and became popularized in the 70’s. Such music festivals are becoming more and more popular today (sorry if this is a reminder that you aren’t going to Coachella) The music genres may have changed, but to this day, we are still influenced by these musical events that were created in the 70’s.

70s fashion trends

I can’t complete this post without talking a little more about the impact the 70’s made on the fashion industry; it is pretty major. Seventies fashion is reviving itself through retro floral patterns and leather satchels. More and more I notice 70’s inspired bell-bottoms, structured wide legged pants, bold and bright symmetrical patterns and my current favourite – off the shoulder blouses. I can’t help but feel lovely when I wear this blush pink one.

What excites me the most about this decades impact on our lives, is the whole idea of being free. I’ve said it before in past posts, fashion to me is about individuality and self-expression – wear what you wish and be who you want to be. The seventies were all about these ideas and I am so happy we are celebrating that again.

70s fashion trends

I put together a little slideshow of a few of my current 70’s inspired items. Take a look… maybe you’ll find something you love!

How do you feel about this current 70s comeback? Is there a retro trend you are currently loving?

black and white is always right

black and white outfit

I am a simple girl. As much as I enjoy things that are aesthetically pleasing and different from the norm, I will never get tired of timeless, classic yet simple styles. Black and white is chic, it is clean, and it is simple. Black and white has always been a go to combination for me when putting together an outfit. Over the years as fashion continues to evolve, black and white continues to be seen, year after year, season after season. The combination of black and white is timeless; it is style that will last forever.

black and white outfit

When spring weather arrives we often decide that the bold colours and big prints should dominate our spring wardrobe – but not always. Don’t get me wrong I love to work with colours and bold fashion but black and white is an every season colour combo, including spring. Look for larger prints or bold stripes combined with a monochrome alternate. Combinations like this allow you to slip right from the office into an evening on the town, something not all of the bold and bright options can do as well.

black and white outfit

Love to accessorize, black and white means you never have to worry that you are styling your outfit wrong. Anything and everything goes with black and white. Whether it’s a bold bright red necklace or a cheetah print hand bag, do not worry, you are doing it right. The same outfit can look entirely fresh when accessorized differently.

black and white outfit

As much as I love playing around with my style, along with wearing bright and bold patterns during these sunny seasons, I will always come back to black and white. There is something about black and white that makes me feel put together, even if the look includes destroyed denim and an oversized sweater. I know when putting an outfit together, no matter the pieces I’m styling, black and white is always right.
