like a boss

business casual look

There’s something about a good pair of fancy pants. You know, the ones that you put on and automatically make you feel 10 times more professional? For me, when I put on my fancy pants I immediately feel like a boss- ready to tackle that day.

I personally believe that it’s better to over dress than under dress and always dress the part. Even in a more casual work environment where there is no need for a complete suit and heals, I find myself feeling more alert and ready to get things accomplished that day if I am dressing the part- wearing my fancy pants.

For those reading that work in a casual atmosphere and are not sure how comfortable they are with dressing more formally for work, do not stress- I promise it is simple. When stressing, think of the words mix and match. What I mean by this is mix a casual piece with a more formal piece. I dressed down my fancy pants with a casual white t-shirt along with some more edgy heals. Another suggestion is pairing a dress with lace up flats like these or a trendier pair of sneakers like these.

being bold

statement pants

The fashion world is big and for many it can often be overwhelming to take it all in. It is always changing and often forcing you to evolve within your personal style. With that said I think it can still be easy to play it safe and stick to what you know. Only taking small risks with trends that are well known and considered “cool”. I personally have always enjoyed playing around with my personal style; wearing things just a little differently than everyone else. The more I became interested in fashion the more I realized that being bold with certain outfits or just a single piece in an outfit can be super fun and thrilling.

I purchased these pants because I really loved the flow of the overall structure of them. Being oversized and super comfortable was also an added bonus. The only moment of question I had when considering the purchase of these pants was in regards to the overall pattern. Was it too bold? How would I style them in a way that would allow me to remain feeling myself? All questioning a side I decided to make the purchase knowing that I would find a way, knowing that it would be good to be a little bold.

Getting out of your comfort zone to explore your own personal style within this big world of fashion may be crazy to think about but I recommend giving it a try if you are curious. Even if it’s testing out a current trend that has caught your eye; you’ll never know until you try it. You know I always tell you to make your own rules and have fun, so go out and do it! The other tip of advice I can give to you is to feel confident no matter what. No one is going to question you if you look like you feel confident in what you are wearing, even if it’s a little bold.

flower power

For those of you who have read my past post on 70’s inspired fashion trends know that I am currently obsessed with the retro style. I consider my personal style quite feminine and believe that many 70’s fashion trends show case many designs that accent a women’s figure in all the right ways; free-flowing silhouettes and blouses to show off a neck line are only a few of my favourites.

I picked up this blouse from Marshall’s and it was love at first sight. I immediately fell in love with the flowing shape and bell sleeves and I knew right then it was going to be a staple in my Spring/ Summer wardrobe for sure. It total gives off retro vibes with a subtle modern mix.

I paired the blouse casually with ripped jeans and neutral wedges for a take on a simple yet chic weekend wear look. I have also envisioned styling the blouse with many other Spring/ Summer bottoms I have in my wardrobe such as patterned Capris and linen pants. Let me know if you’d like to see any of these suggested looks!

“If you love something set it free, if it comes back it’s meant to be”- my mother

This is a quote that will probably be in my brain forever. It is such a simple message that remains so true. Although normally when my mother spoke these wise words to me they were in regards to providing advice about conflicts with a friend or someone I was dating at the time, today I am going to relate it to my love of shopping.

Do you ever see something in a store and talk yourself out of buying it to then later regret it? This isn’t something that happens to me so often; if I walk away from a purchase I’ve usually accepted it by the time I’m out of the store. I recently made one exception when pondering over this nautical inspired button down. I wasn’t sure if I should buy it because I knew I wouldn’t be able to wear it until the weather was a lot warmer. When I buy something I wanna wear it right away.

While trying to decide if I should buy the button down or not I thought of the wise words of my mother and put the blouse down. After leaving the store and arriving home I kept thinking of all the different ways I would style the button down, leading me to decide that I must go back to buy it. When I arrived back to the store just a few days later, they unfortunately were sold out and wouldn’t receive any others because it was on sale. I figured that I set it free and it just wasn’t meant to be.

A few weeks down the road I was visiting Quebec City and I stopped in at the store that sold the button down that I loved oh so much. To my great surprise, it was there, still on sale and in my size. I thought to myself once again of the wise words from my mama, picked up the button down and headed to the cash. It was meant to be.

back to black

knee high boot outfit

With the weather still flipping and flopping I have been slowly transitioning my wardrobe. I have this weird association with warm weather and colour. Any time the weather goes around 20 degrees celsius or higher I wear colour and a lot of it. Any temperature below that 20 degree mark- you’ll find me wearing dark shades. This weekend the weather went back to cooler temps which meant back to black for me.

When the weather isn’t working in my favour I can always count on a black and white outfit to leave me feeling comfortable and put together.  For those who follow along on my posts on a regular basis know that I love the combination of black and white. If you have yet to learn about this love affair you can read about it here.

Knee high boots leave me feeling sassy yet classy. When you do not want to show too much leg while the temperatures are still cooler, this footwear option is a great choice. A personal favourite style choice for knee-high boots is pairing them with a mini skirt and a beautiful blouse. Showing off just a little bit of leg adds some sass to your look while the feminine touches of a lovely blouse adds the class.

history of the canadian tuxedo- a bloggers perspective

canadian tuxedo

In 2001 two famous pop stars decided to walk the red carpet of the American Music Awards in matching outfits, this was shocking to many. Unfortunately the couple is no longer together, but their style choice from this red carpet appearance will never be forgotten. Thank you Justin Timberlake and Brittany Spears for introducing us to the Canadian Tuxedo. Many may be wondering why this denim on denim look is called the Canadian Tuxedo so today; I am here to shed some light on this question.

I may slightly break your heart with the news I am about to share regarding the history of the Canadian Tuxedo, but trust me- it needs to be known. Although it would have been completely awesome to say that Justin and Brittany were the first to rock the trend of the Canadian Tuxedo, I would be lying if I stated that. Truth is another famous musical artist can take this title. Bing Crosby, a famous crooner from the 50’s decided to enter an upscale hotel in Vancouver Canada sporting the denim on denim look. Shockingly, he was nearly rejected due to his outfit choice. Eventually this news got out and into the right hands – the hands of famous denim manufacturer Levis Straus. When Levi Straus heard of the unfortunate occurrence which had happened to Bing, they were quick to send a specially designed, all denim Tuxedo to Bing Crosby. Because this event had happened in Canada the Canadian Tuxedo was born.

Even though Timberlake and Spears are sadly not the first to sport this look, I would like to think that they were inspired by Bing and wanted to revolutionize Bing’s take on the style.

Although this trend may not be a go to choice for your #ootd (outfit of the day), I am sure that we can all agree recently noticing this style gaining popularity. Did you see Katy Perry rock the look at the MTV awards? I will admit that it took me some time to try out this trend, not being able to find the perfect denim button down and unsure of what shoes and accessories to style it with. Today, I am ready to share my take on the Canadian Tuxedo.

Styled with contrasting shades of denim and neutral booties along with a statement bomber jacket, I felt like I perfected the look. What’s fun about this trend is you can still make it your own; it is so easy to style because you are pairing a basic piece on top of another. Like I always tell you, make your own rules and accessorize and style this trend in the best way that expresses your own personal style.
